About Us

The main focus of the Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit (RMPRU) is to evaluate vaccines that are aimed at combating diseases caused by pneumococcus, rotavirus and Group B streptococcus. The unit engages in both clinical, laboratory and surveillance research in Soweto and surrounding areas.   

Among its many successes the unit played an instrumental role in providing the scientific basis that lead to the PCV vaccine being included in the national immunisation rollout. In addition, the unit also explored a pivotal study that examined the efficacy of intrapartum chlorhexidine washes was published in The Lancet in December 2009.
